What is lupus?

Lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks its own tissues, causing widespread inflammation and organ damage.

02

The symptoms

Common symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, rashes, and loss of appetite.

03

Diagnosis

Lupus is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Its diverse and overlapping symptoms can mirror many other conditions, which is why diagnosis often takes time.

04

Treatments

While there is no cure for lupus, treatments can help manage symptoms, prevent flares, and reduce organ damage. Managing lupus is a team effort — your specialist, GP, nurses,
and healthcare team all play an important role.
